A New Language for a New Life's Work

Willie Lynch spoke these words in his "The Making of a Slave" speech delivered to an audience of slaveholders on the bank of Virginia's James River in 1712. This was a full sixty-three years before the American revolution. His presentation clearly effected the trajectory and harshness of slavery in the United States. William Lynch was English and the British treatment of slaves was know to be the most brutal among the various nations engaged in the slave trade.

What did Lynch mean by a new language for a new life's work? He equated slavery to a language of physical, torturous work where self-esteem and self-worth could be destroyed by manipulating the mind through trauma to control the body. This mind hack plays out in the story of the circus elephant chained to a post. A fire broke out in the main tent and though the elephant trainer unchained the elephant and shooed him to leave, the animal would not move and burned to death. The elephant though free was conditioned to remain captured and ultimately those mental chains could not be broken.

The quote rightly or wrongly attributed to Harriet Tubman concerning the Underground Railroad purports, "I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves."

Willie Lynch describes traumatizing the enslaved through brutality to create a new language of subservience and hopelessness for a "new life" of perpetual, intergenerational slavery.

What does Willie Lynch's letter have to do with melanin and the Amenta? The power of the mind to unfetter the chains of torture occurs when language is felt and understood; elevated.
